Nokia has already managed to come back from the grave with its brilliant mix of low-cost design, user-friendly ergonomics, and exclusive software in its Windows Phone Lumia line. The problem with coming out of the gate that strongly, though, is trying to keep the momentum going. There’s nothing worse than a one-hit wonder in the consumer electronics world. So Nokia is planning to wow us again with its PureView 808 technology.
The impressive device was an incredible feat when it was first unveiled – with Carl Zeiss optics and a 41-megapixel sensor, it was for all intents and purposes the most sophisticated camera phone technology ever created. Unfortunately, it was built for the Symbian Belle operating system, which as we all know is now a dead platform. But there’s good news – PureView 808 is making its way to the Windows Phone operating system.
In an interview with a newspaper in Nokia’s home country of Finland, SVP of mobile phones Jo Harlow was quoted as saying that the amazing mobile feat will be available for an entire new audience. It’s been reported that the gadget will be making its way to US shores as part of the company’s Lumia brand. It’s likely to use the impending update to Windows Phone, known by the code-name Apollo. “I can’t say precisely when [the Windows Phone variant will launch], but it will not take very long,” Harlow said, according to a translation.

Facebook releases Messenger for Windows 7

Facebook released a messenger app for Window 7 after a test link was allegedly leaked.
According to Tech Crunch, the Israeli blog TechIT leaked a download link of Facebook Messenger for Windows. A blogger for the site claimed to have an unprotected download link and went on to publish it. Reports indicate that Facebook has been testing the app since Nov.
Facebook Messenger is the first app created by the social network for Windows desktop. A preview of the app was debuted last year and was "largely built" by Facebook's Seattle office, the social network told Venture Beat.
So, what are the features of Facebook Messenger?
Think of it as a chat client that also has notifications and a ticker, similar to the one on the right of the news feed. Essentially it gives Facebook an opportunity to have a presence on your desktop, even if the website is not open.
Of course, a similar integration is already available via the Skype chat client, which has a Facebook news feed.
Facebook Messenger is available now for Windows 7. Mac, Windows XP and Vista users will have to wait. Facebook says an app is in the works for those operating systems.

Going beyond Facebook, Zynga launches Zynga.com site


Zynga.com just went live. Announced last week, the web site is a new destination for Zynga’s gamers, who have been largely confined to playing games on Facebook.
The San Francisco social gaming giant says the site is aimed at making games more convenient and accessible for the mass market of users who don’t already play games on social networks or other platforms. Zynga executives have not been bashful about their ambition of getting a billion users to play the company’s games.
The system is integrated with Facebook, since it uses Facebook identities to set up networks of friends and it also uses Facebook Credits to fulfill virtual goods transactions. Now the company’s 240 million monthly active users on Facebook will be able to join a destination site where the users are all gamers, in contrast to Facebook, where a quarter of the people play games.
Zynga is also launching its Zynga Platform for publishing games that are built by external publishers and developers. The new site will give Zynga a measure of independence from Facebook, but the companies are still glued at the hip and working closely with each other.
Zynga chief operating officer John Schappert said in an interview with VentureBeat last week that Zynga will continue to use Facebook Credits as the underlying virtual goods payment system for Zynga.com’s users. Facebook takes a 30 percent tax on every Facebook Credit transaction, and most analysts believed Zynga would move off of Facebook to escape that fee. But by using Facebook Credits as well as Facebook Connect, Zynga is showing its alliance with the social network is still pretty tight. Of course, if relations with Facebook ever get frosty, Zynga could turn on other forms of virtual goods payment.
With the Zynga Platform, Zynga is behaving just a game console owner does. It publishes its own games as a “first party” on the platform. But it also recruits promising companies to create their own games to run on the platform as third parties.
The third-party developers can get access to promotions that will get their games in front of Zynga’s users. They will also get access to the functions and viral channels that help increase social engagement. An example is a Social Stream on the Zynga.com home page, where users can click on objects and directly import them into the game without interrupting game play.
The platform could be very attractive to third-party game developers who also need analytics to drive their understanding of users. Zynga has long used this as a competitive advantage, revising its games on-the-fly to be as user-friendly as possible. Zynga measures social engagement in its games through a metric that looks at a player’s “active social network.” The number of active neighbors that a player engages with in a game directly impacts how meaningful an experience they have. Those with good numbers are likely to continue playing.
Zynga will also use zCloud, its public-private infrastructure for hosting games at Zynga’s own data centers. That zCloud will help the games from smaller developers skyrocket based on demand, rather than being held back by weak infrastructure. A number of third-party developers have already signed up to be Zynga Platform partners, including Mob Science and Row Sham Bow. More are expected.With this new business, Zynga is effectively offering its own version of Amazon Web Services.
Many of Zynga’s games require a player to get 10 friends to help with a task before the player can progress. With Facebook, the player has a risk of alienating friends if they spam them with such game help requests. But on Zynga.com, all of the members will be game fans and player profiles will enable them to easily find like-minded gamers. When you inspect a potential friend’s record, you can see how often that player helps other players. It’s also easier to embark on joint quests with friends in real-time.
Zynga will provide five of its top games on Zynga.com when it launches in early March: CastleVille, Words With Friends, CityVille, Hidden Chronicles and Zynga Poker. More third-party games will also be available soon.
Zynga.com could become a powerful tool for promoting and discovering social games. Not every Facebook gamer will sign up for Zynga.com, but those who do will self-segment themselves into the most loyal fans.
Players can sign up at Zynga.com to create a new game-playing identity for themselves. But players can easily log in with their Facebook identities and play games with existing Facebook friends. Or they can play with their “zFriends.”
Because Zynga has engineered the game site for speed, it can run games a lot faster than Facebook does. You don’t have to wait for a message to be posted to a news feed or wall — a process that can take many seconds on Facebook — if you just want to announce an achievement to your friends. The Social Stream can also get you access to items in a game without forcing you to leave your game board. You can chat in real-time inside a game, and send gifts or messages without leaving the game.
The play service will be available in 16 languages, including: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Indonesian, Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, Swedish, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Thai.
The Zynga Platform, first introduced as Project Z in October, the work has been going on for some time. Of the delay, Schappert said, “Development is complicated. We feel it is now in a good state for the masses of consumers.”

Android 'Key Lime Pie' rumored to follow Jelly Bean



It just feels like yesterday that we were talking about Android 5.0 Jelly Bean. Actually, wait, it wasyesterday that we were talking about Jelly Bean. 
And now we are hearing that the version of Android to come after that will be named Key Lime Pie.

This information comes courtesy of The Verge, who received this tip from the same source that informed them about Jelly Bean (which turned out to be real). Unfortunately, they don't know when exactly Google will release this update but going by its current pace it should be some time in the early 2013.
While all this sounds delicious and exciting, the current reality is that only a handful of devices are running the latest Ice Cream Sandwich update, three months after it was released. And while Google continues to operate at a breakneck speed with its Android updates, the truth remains that most of us will never get them at the same speed.

iOS App Store hits 25 billlion downloads

Apple's download the 25 billionth app from the iOS App Store contest has come to a close, which means the iOS App Store has officially reached 25 billion downloads. 


The winner of the contest has not been named, yet, but some lucky girl or guy out there has a $10,000 (approx Rs.4,92,700) gift certificate to the iTunes Store to her or his name. 


According to Redmond Pie, this confirms that the iOS App Store is currently the biggest hub for mobile applications. 


Apple made the announcement on its website with a banner reading, “A billion thanks. 25 times over. The App Store has reached 25 billion downloads. Thanks for getting us there.” The winner can spend the winnings on apps, music or books from Apple's online stores.

Microsoft's Windows 8 Consumer Preview, in its first 24 hours after being released, was downloaded 1 million times.
Not too bad for an operating system still in beta, not finished and not ready for a consumer retail shelf. But then again, the software was made available as a free download.
The Windows 8 development team announced the massive number on Twitter on Thursday in a tweet that said, simply, "One day later ... one million downloads of the consumer preview."
The Consumer Preview release, like the Developer Preview released in September, is a step toward bringing Windows 8 and its touch-compatible user interface to tablets, laptops and desktops later this year.
Microsoft is releasing the software partly to get developers to start using the new operating system and build apps that work on touch-centric devices, as well as with the traditional keyboard, mouse and trackpad.
But while developers are no doubt a focal point for Microsoft, anyone can download the new software for free -- app builder or not.
